Between June 2008 and July 2009 John Stanton authored 19 essays documenting the trials and tribulations of the US Army’s Human Terrain System (HTS). Dominance of the Human Terrain is a critical component of US Army General David Petraeus’ (Central Command, Commanding General) counterinsurgency campaigns in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. In fact, the US Army’s Human Terrain System seems destined to become a central part of America’s overall national security strategy under President Barak Obama. HTS is to be incorporated into other combatant commands such as Strategic Command (STRATCOM), Africa Command (AFRICOM) and Southern Command (SOUTHCOM). It is unfortunate that the US Army ignored the troublesome aspects of HTS as relayed by 45 sources and documented in this book. All the problems were self‐inflicted and could have been fixed if the program’s prime mover, General Petraeus, had stepped in. Leadership was absent at the helm. If HTS is to be an anchor of US National Security Strategy, then it deserves far more scrutiny by the mainstream press, internal investigators and civilian and military leadership.
